Here's my entry for the latest Seventh Sanctum competition, a concept I whole-heartedly agree with (alternative characters for vampires -> [link]
). Here's goes, the legend of Colic Fargrave...
"One of the darker legends of Sapphire Ocean is the tale of Colic Fargrave, one of the most mysterious and infamous vampires to ever plague the seas. The legend began over one hundred years ago, a time when vampires were still considered a plague (while still feared, these days they are seen as a legitimate species). Fargrave’s family lived a docile life on the village island of Crépuscule. This island was visited by a boat bringing merchants and . However, the traders brought with them an stowaway who had contracted the “Vampire Plague” and come nightfall this stowaway started to claim victims.
Within a week a third of the villagers were infected, including Colic who was ostracised by his family. Despite several casualties, these vampires retained some of their humanity and allowed the uninfected to sail way before ‘the hunger‘ took over. When the survivors attempted to sail away from Crépuscule, they were brutally slaughtered by mercenaries known as “Hunters”, who proceeded to storm Crépuscule. The Hunters massacred the remaining vampires except for Colic who remained in hiding.
During his human childhood, like many young people Colic idolised swashbuckling heroes, and after the initial grief of both becoming a vampire and losing his loved ones Colic realised that nothing could hold back his wanderlust, despite societies hatred of vampires at the time.
As the decades passed and the number of victims rose, Colic became world-weary and astute, though being stuck in the body of a nine year old allowed him to maintain his idealistic mindset. After he single-handedly killed several of the Hunters who murdered the villagers of Crépuscule, Colic vowed to only ever feed on anyone he considered evil, such as pirates. Ever since this vow, Colic has travelled across Sapphire Ocean in search of wrong-doers to reap his bloodthirsty justice on. Anyone he meets assumes that he is just another child, which Colic uses to his advantage to disguise his true form."
Phew. Colic's character is based on Hit-Girl; i.e. an innocent-looking child who turns out to be a bad-ass.
